I have decided to implement a theme for the week. We began the 'apple' theme today, because, a) we are going on a field trip tomorrow to a place that has a 100 year old apple press, and b) I found a free lapbook study on 'apples' at liveandlearnpress.com.
Fingerplay
“Baby in the Basket”
Bible Story
Exodus 2:5-10
Children's Bible: Moses was found by the Pharoah's daughter
Dramatic Play
I had the boys take their stuffed animals and pretend that they are 'babies'. They pretended to change diapers, feed them, rock, them. We sang 'Jesus Loves Me' to the babies, and we put them to bed.
Letter Activity
I had the boys fingerpaint the letter 'F'. “A” did a great job of staying inside the lines! (Something I requested of him.)
We also took this time to review that red, yellow, and blue were primary colors, and that yellow and blue make green, yellow and red make orange, and red and blue make purple, and all three make brown.
I think it has 'clicked' with “R”. The past two letters 'E' and 'F', he has been able to immediately say what they are on sight, without prompting. It will be interesting to see how he does upon review of the other letters.
Bible Activity
The boys acted out the story of Moses being found by the Pharoah's daughter. I gave them prompts and they acted them out, pretending to be the Pharoah's daughter.
We then talked about what mothers to do care for their children.
“A” said: they put bandaids on owies, feed you, and let you play on their computer.
“R” said: they play cars
“O” (visiting friend) said: they take you to the doctor when you are sick
Music
Played “Baby Moses”
Lapbook
We made an acrostic poem for the 'apple' cover. Here is what they came up with (with some good prompting from me).
Apples are good
Pears are yummy, too
Penguins do not eat apples
Lavender, you can smell
Elephants eat apples
We also cut an apple in half and put paint on it and stamped the cover. It did not turn out very well, but, oh well. You will see when finished.
Spanish
I had the boys sing 'Estrellita, Donde esta?' (Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star) without my assistance. 'A' nailed it, and 'R' did very well. They each got a big star sticker.
I then quizzed them on colors. For every color they got right, they got a sticker.
'A' knew amarillo, and azul
'R' knew amarillo

Thank you for your comment on my blog! It encourages me to continue blogging when I get comments. I have been discouraged lately and considered dropping out. Something keeps pulling me back….the encouragement I receive from reading other blogs myself mostly.
We wil be starting the same freebie lapbook tomorrow. I may steal your poem! LOL
Your boys are so cute. I love to see what other ladies are doing in their homeschools. Ours is going so well. Today was our first official field trip, and day off. I decided not to do lessons since we were going on the field trip. They kids have been working hard, and deserved a break. We have a few things to make up tomorrow though! Hope you’re doing well…..
Love, Kathy
I think themes are great ideas for young children. I don’t have time to do as much as I did with my first two, but you reminded me how fun it is to have kids do tactical creations with letters-e.g. beans on the large letter F etc… I think I’ll start doing this again with my preschooler while teaching the older ones.
