Bible Story
Job 2:3-10, 42:10
Children’s Bible: We learned about the trials of Job and his faithfulness
Math Activity
I placed items on a table that represented Job’s possessions:
toy squirrel=sheep
quarter=money
a picture of the boys=Job’s kids
a box=his house
a banana=food
(OK, I am slightly freaking out here…I am writing this on January 5th, a full week after this activity. I could not remember what the individual items were, so I asked ‘A’, assuming he might remember one of them and help jump start my memory. Never mind. He remembered every item AND what they represented! Dang!)
I lined up each item and the boys counted them. Then I took away one item, and the boys recounted. I took away one more item and the boys recounted. When there were none left, I introduced the number ‘Zero’. I then added the items, one at a time and the boys counted each time.
Letter Activity
The boys practiced witing the letter ‘N’. (I assisted ‘R’)
Bible Activity
We talked about the blessings God has given us. The boys said: toys, pets, food, clothes, house.
I added: friends, family, church, health
I asked: “Have any blessings ever been taken away? Boys: “Yes, sometimes my brother takes my toys” (Both boys said this. First ‘A’, then ‘R’ parroted)
I asked: “How did you feel?” Boys: “Bad”
I asked: Did you get mad at God? “A”: “No, I get mad at my brother”
I asked: “What does God want us to do even when some of our blessings are taken away? “A”: “Well, the commandments say, ‘Do not murder’.
Read Aloud
‘The Ugly Duckling’, from “The World Treasury of Children’s Literature”
Outside Activity
We were visiting our family in Idaho at this time. While we were out in the snow, I had the boys experience and explain through their senses.
Sight: They saw snow, mountains, deer fur
Sound: Quiet, crunch when walking in the snow
Smell: Snow smells like “cold ice cream without flavor”
Touch: Cold (en espanol-‘hace mucho frio’)
