A Date with my Son

My husband and I have often talked about having date night one on one with our boys.  But, we have always ended up staying together.  Well, we finally made the break, and had an official date date with our sons.  I took ‘A’ and DH took ‘R’.

One thing to know about ‘A’ is that he LOVES to talk and his brain is always on the go.  It is hard to always listen to him and I admittedly do not always give him undivided attention.  For this night, I wanted to just absorb my son.  I wanted to hear everything he had to say and watch his every move.  I wanted to be 100% present for him.

I asked ‘A’ if he wanted to know what I had planned, but he said he wanted the night to be a surprise.  On the way to our first destination, we played a round of 20 questions.  This is something he loves to do when we are in the car.

We started out at Jamba Juice.  They make these yummy little flatbread pizzas.  ‘A’ loves the MediterraneYUM and lemonade.  I enjoyed just sitting there, staring into his eyes and listening to all he had to say.

Then, we moved next door to Petroglyph, the ceramics studio.  ‘A’ picked out a gecko to paint, and I painted another napkin ring.  He had never painted anything like this before and enjoyed it.

After that, I asked him, “if you could have any dessert tonight, what would it be?”  He thought about it and replied, “chocolate cake”.   Hmmmm, I was thinking he’d say gelato or a sundae.  Where does one find a slice of chocolate cake?  Then it dawned on me, the king of chocolate cake….Claim Jumper!  It had been ages since I have been to a Claim Jumper, but I recall they had a big slice of chocolate cake.    We went there, and I took one look at the slice and said, “um, yeah, no, that’s not going to happen.”  It was six layers and $10!  ‘A’ never saw it, so he does not know what he’s missing.  We ordered him an old fashioned chocolate cupcake ala mode and a glass of milk.  He was in heaven.   We talked about the Tom and Jerry cartoon, and more 20 questions.

DH and ‘R’ still weren’t home when we got home, so we cuddled on the couch and watched a movie.  I was tired and wanted to go to bed, so I had ‘A’ join me and we played more 20 questions until the rest came home.

DH and ‘R’ went to Spaghetti Factory and a movie.  It was such a sweet night.  This needs to be a regular event.
