As I was updating my blog, I went back to take a look at past events. I was surprised to discover that I had not posted about this event. This event is what kind of got me started with painting.

A couple years ago, I was inspired by a digital app that modified photos to look “bubbly”. I kept thinking how I’d like to see that in painting form. Decided to start playing around and dismayed at my first result. But, my son Alex liked the piece and asked for it. I decided to try again.

After a few more pieces completed, I was torn between continuing because I did not want to just create items and not do anything with them, but I did not have the confidence that my pieces were worth doing anything with.

I attended a local women’s meetup group of artists and brought three pieces with me. They were very supportive and encouraged me to submit some pieces into a show to receive objective feedback.

Coincidentally, there was a local show coming up the following week! EEEEKKK! I decided to make it a learning process and not have any expectations.

I submitted three pieces on Thursday. They said if they weren’t accepted, I would get a call on Friday. I did get a call on Friday, but it was to get the ok to have them placed under a different category than the one I submitted them for. I responded, “If they are accepted, you can place them wherever you want!”

The next day, I walked in to see the show and see there my pieced were hanging. I was stunned to discover that my piece “Riverwalk” had won 3rd place in Acrylics!! I won $25 as well!! The encouragement of the women’s artist group and this show gave me the courage to continue creating ant trust my point of view.

This is the feedback from the juror, Sacramento artist and teacher, Robert Regis Dvorak
