Lesson 5/8/07

It was a beautiful day today!  The boys played out in the backyard this morning.  ‘A’ came in and asked for an umbrella because he was hot.  This is what I found a little later…

Bible
Children’s Everyday Bible: We read that God created man and woman and we read about the forbidden fruit.

Memory Verse
‘A’ recited Proverbs 4:20 "Pay attention, my child, to what I say.  Listen carefully."
‘R’ says it with prompting.

Read Aloud
Simple Simon Rhyme
Rabbit and Tiger Save the World

Language Arts
Developing the Early Learner Book 1 worksheets.  The boys had to look at a picture and decide which picture belongs with it. (ex.  a match goes with a fire or a forest…)  They got them all correct.

Science
Berenstain Bears Book of Science and Nature:  We read about ‘winter’ and learned that:

  • the first three months of the year are winter: January, February, March
  • it’s c-c-c-c-oooooolllllldddddd
  • you can see your breath
  • bears hibernate in winter
  • it snows

Social Studies
We read about the fictional Island of Banilla again and all the people that love and work there in the book ‘Things People Do.’

Character
We read from 365 Manners Every Child Should Know.  We learned how to set an informal table, with the plate in the center, the napkin and for on the left, the knife next to the plate on the right and the spoon.  The water glass above the knife, the dessert or salad plate above the fork.  All need to be straight and level to each other.

The boys set the table that evening with Daddy.

We read Right Choices.  We learned that it is wrong to tell a lie and that it is more important in the eyes of God to admit wrongoing and ask forgiveness than it is to lie to avoid the consequence.  We also read the verse, Ephesians 20:16 ‘You must not tell lies.’

Math
Singapore Earlybird 1A Math Workbook Lesson 2:  1) The boys drew lines connecting items that went together (ex. notepad and pencil, rice bowl and chopsticks, paint can and paintbrush, etc.) 2) They looked at an item on the left and had to circle the one item out of three that went with it (ex. the hand goes with the hat, flipflop, or glove). 3) They had to cross out an item that does not belong (ex. car, teddy bear, wagon, skateboard) and had to say why it did not belong (because it does not have wheels). 4) The last page had a table with clothes all over it.  ‘R’ had to color only the items that were for a girl and ‘A’ had to color the items that were for a boy.  (They both got one "Wrong", which is debatable because a girl would wear a baseball cap and a boy would wear this type of shoe, but in the context of this page, we had to set parameters.)

Reading
I had my mother’s helper with me today.  She helped with some of the homeschool activities, including listening to ‘A’ read.  I know he read one of the earlier Bob Books and I think that’s all we had time for.

We began Lesson 2 in "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons", but we did not have time to finish it.

Physical
The boys rode their bikes around the block with Daddy
‘A’ had martial arts.
The boys and I met up with friends after dinner to ride bikes at Rattlesnake Lake.

Life
Grocery Run
Bank
Shopped for clothes for me
Library
The only ‘to do’ that we did not get to was getting the car washed.  Tomorrow, maybe.
