The Safe Side

I have mentioned before that every Thursday my homeschool group meets for Bible Study at church.  The kids are in their own class, where the first hour is devoted to homework and the second hour is free/structured play.  After our meeting, we all meet in the church courtyard for lunch and the kids play in the courtyard and playground for the rest of the afternoon.  It is an excellent time for the kids to play with friends of different ages and genders, in a safe setting.

A couple of weeks, however, an uncomfortable thing occurred.  We discovered that there was a man in a car scoping out a couple of the girls that were skating around the buildings.  One of the cafe volunteer noticed him and as she went to approach him, he took off.

Today, my friend Christie, brought a DVD to show the kids.  The cafe was kind to let us use their big screen TV.  This DVD was an excellent way to introduce "stranger danger" to kids without inflicting fear.  I can’t recommend this enough.  It was funny, entertaining, yet highly educational, and created a comfortable sequeway to discuss safety issues.

You can get information on this DVD at The Safe Side.
