Colder mornings equal hot oatmeal breakfasts in our family. In the past, our oatmeal would be smothered in brown sugar, milk, raisins, and maybe nuts or chopped apple.
I learned that maple syrup can be a good and clean substitute for brown sugar, (real maple syrup, not pancake syrup). Did you know the brown sugar is actually white sugar and molasses? I never really thought about it…
So, I topped our oatmeal with maple syrup, bananas, and almond milk. The maple syrup was delicious and none of us felt like we were “settling” on flavor. I just have to reconcile the cost difference…
The next time I will make oatmeal, I plan on creating an oatmeal topping bin, with dried fruit and nuts for variety.
