My friend Grace had us over for some fantastic science experiments! She did a great job organizing a fun afternoon.
Experiment #1: make a lava lamp
Fill a bottle with vegetable oil and a little water. Add food coloring. Break up alka -seltzer tablets and place in the bottle. The pictures don’t do it justice, but the little colored blobs move up and down the bottle. We also compared the difference of how hard the bottle was when the cap was on versus off.
Experiment #2: Expanding Soap
We started the experiment by placing a bar of Ivory soap and a bar of Irish Spring soap in a bucket of water. Grace had the kids guess if either would float. The Ivory bar did. Then, she gave each boy a bar of Ivory soap and placed each bar on a paper towel in the microwave. Take a look at what happened!
Experiment #3: Marshmallow Guns
Cut out the bottom of a paper cup and tape a cut piece of balloon on the bottom. Place a mini marshmallow in the cup. Pull the balloon back and “fire!”
Snack Break: Banana Sushi
Remove the crust on two pieces of bread. Place the two pieces next to each other length-wise and slightly overlap. Roll the two pieces together until flat. Spread peanut butter on bread. Place a whole banana at one end of the bread width-wise, and roll up the banana. Cut into sushi slices, then drizzle chocolate sauce on top!
Experiment #4: Flubber
I am not sure what recipe Grace had for Flubber, but I think this looks to be the same. We added green food coloring…
Flubber pillows…
‘A’ said this reminds him of the troll kings chin in the “Hobbit’
‘R’ face planted and made farting sounds, causing all the boys to follow suit. They were laughing so hard!
After leaving our friend’s house, K and N joined us at home for the evening. The kids all played in the hot tub, and the boys decided to jump into the unheated pool…in February…
The boys had some Ivory soap bar left and showed the girls the expanding soap experiment. It was a great day!
We had a great time too! Thanks for blessing us with your wonderful boys and of course YOU!
