I always marvel at how two people can be raised in a similar manner yet still be so different. One of the differences our boys have is in regards to shopping, AKA “the hunt”.
Example: Clothing.
We give the boys the same amount of money for clothing allowance. Alex will go to the mall, pick one popular store, pick out a couple items, and is back home within the hour. He only wants black, classic style, and will pay full retail for a few nice items.
Ryan goes on the hunt. He will pick about five stores. He will go slowly through each store, but not buy anything. He will take note of items of interest. Then after going through all the stores, he will go through a second, sometimes even third, time, and also shop sales, and try to get the lowest price on similar items. He will walk away with more items. Most are bright colors with some sort of pattern or graphic.
I introduced the boys to thrift shopping a couple years back. Alex has no desire to shop them, but Ryan appreciates the hunt. Recently, I took him to a couple Goodwill Superstores along the Oregon coast. We both found a few items, but he was thrilled to discover this jacket. It’s a little large on him, but extremely comfortable. It’s also has many technical elements and is a terrific jacket. I don’t recall the price, but it was truly a score!
