These are bittersweet photos for a couple reasons. One reason is the reality of how quickly these precious boys are growing into men. Just two years ago, this was the photo taken with Christina…
The other reason is that this organization no longer has funding and is going on hold for now. We are grateful for our time serving with them. This event was the last event we did together.
We made a quick trip to Manzanita. Just a few nights. The boys and I decided to make a spontaneous day trip to Portland while Dad stayed home with the puppers.
A sole sister of our run club suffered the devastation of losing her beautiful daughter. We gathered for a memorial walk to honor her memory. Many tears, and hugs. You are not alone and you are loved.
I oversee at team of ushers and greeters for our church’s 9:45 Sunday service in the video cafe. Every second Sunday of the month, we gather at Sizzler for lunch. It’s optional and we never know who is going to show up. This is one of those gatherings…
There are a few things that are uniquely “Me and Alex”. Eating shellfish is one of them. We went to the Crawdad and Catfish Festival in Woodland. It takes a lot of work to eat crawdads, but we did it and enjoyed them. We also had a delicious dish of catfish. Dessert was extremely overpriced beignets -to say we were fleeced is an understatement). They event had three different music stages with bluegrass, zydeco, and other southern style jams. We loved listening to the music and watching people dance. It was a fun day.
As I was updating my blog, I went back to take a look at past events. I was surprised to discover that I had not posted about this event. This event is what kind of got me started with painting.
A couple years ago, I was inspired by a digital app that modified photos to look “bubbly”. I kept thinking how I’d like to see that in painting form. Decided to start playing around and dismayed at my first result. But, my son Alex liked the piece and asked for it. I decided to try again.
After a few more pieces completed, I was torn between continuing because I did not want to just create items and not do anything with them, but I did not have the confidence that my pieces were worth doing anything with.
I attended a local women’s meetup group of artists and brought three pieces with me. They were very supportive and encouraged me to submit some pieces into a show to receive objective feedback.
Coincidentally, there was a local show coming up the following week! EEEEKKK! I decided to make it a learning process and not have any expectations.
I submitted three pieces on Thursday. They said if they weren’t accepted, I would get a call on Friday. I did get a call on Friday, but it was to get the ok to have them placed under a different category than the one I submitted them for. I responded, “If they are accepted, you can place them wherever you want!”
The next day, I walked in to see the show and see there my pieced were hanging. I was stunned to discover that my piece “Riverwalk” had won 3rd place in Acrylics!! I won $25 as well!! The encouragement of the women’s artist group and this show gave me the courage to continue creating ant trust my point of view.
Through Rocklin Fine Arts, I was able to have two pieces placed in Umpqua Bank, Lincoln for an art show! One of the pieces ended up on the promotional material too! That was a nice suprise.
