Fun with the Boys

The boys have been working hard for their first few months of ninth grade. I decided to treat them to a day of fun and get our of our heads for a while.

I took them to Sacramento and we had lunch at the Capitol Garage. The boys loved the urban vibe. Ryan asked that I take photos of the art on the walls.

Then…I took them to Zion VR. This is a virtual reality game center. Each person has their own “room”. I captured video of the boys, but not photo. They played for two hours. I booked myself for the last hour. There were many different games and experiences to explore. It was a ton of fun and a much needed escape for all of us.

A Hard 18 Miles

I am currently training for my first (only?) marathon. Training with friends makes it much more enjoyable and helps with enduring when it gets hard.

This run hot hard for me. I ran/walked (i do 3 minute run/1 minute walk intervals) a solid 13 miles, then my body said “now walk”. I had to pretty much walk the last five miles. THAT was brutal.

Went back to the board to look at pace, fuel, etc.

Our long runs have take place along the American River Parkway. It’s a lovely, flat route along the river. One can run, walk, ride bikes for miles.

Boneshakers Beer Run

Some of our favorite group runs end up with beer, such as this one. We like Boneshakers!

Vegan Cooking Class

A local cafe offers vegan cooking classes once a month. I attended one with my friends Crystal and Emily. The owner of the cafe is Jamaican and we were introduced to wonderful seasonings.

Hot. Hills. No shoulder for running. Running back country residential roads, but dealing with cars. Not one I’d endeavor to do again. Always a good time with friends though.

Ready to go. Feeling good!

This is a neat story. I knew these men would be here, but did not know that this event would be small enough for us to actually see them up close. Dean Otto was hit by a truck and was paralyzed while riding his bike. His doctor stated a 2% chance for recovery. Exactly one year to the day, Dean, his doctor, and the man who hit him, all ran the Napa Half marathon together!

They were interviewed on the Ellen show. You can see it here.

Here’s an article on them…

Finally done!!

This is a graph that compares the Napa Half with the Santa Rosa Half. The Napa is in gold. Guess which one I’d rather run again 🙂

The Lychee

Alex and I were shopping Whole Foods and came across the lychee. Neither had tried them before and decided to give it a go. We both liked it. Kind of like a sweet grape with a big seed in the center.

Our local run club (Moms Run This Town/MRTT) hosted a Fall run for the ladies in our group. It was a 5K out of a local park. Here’s some photos from that fun morning…

F.L.U.T. Aid Station

As a runner, it’s important to not only receive, but to also give back to the running community. I love volunteering at the aid stations for ultra marathons. These are trail races that range from 50-100 miles in distance. I volunteered for this year’s Folsom Lake Ultra Trail race (F.L.U.T.) I did two shifts (12 hours) at the last station (I think we were at mile 69). It was hot. It was tough. Not everyone made the cutoff. Kudos to all who tried. This race actually runs around all of Lake Folsom!

The boys and I volunteer for a local parent drug education organization called the Coalition for Placer Youth. We hoped at the booth for the Hot Chili Cool Cars event in Rocklin. They closed down one of the main streets. Part of the street has a chili competition, and another part showcases vintage cars.

The boys and I made a “car wash”, that hung from the booth. Kids walked through it at the boys misted them with water bottles through holes. They also handed out brain shaped stress balls and had people sign up for a raffle for a full size gummy brain!
