I gave the boys $60 and challenged them to create a dinner menu (with dessert), then shop and cook on their own. (they did not spend the whole amount; I just wanted to make sure they were covered.)

While I met with friends at a nearby coffee shop, the boys went to Whole Foods and bought their ingredients. Their menu for the evening:

1st course: Raw spiraled zucchini with bottles citrus vinaigrette
2nd Course: Penne a la Vodka
Dessert: Chocolate dipped frozen bananas

They did an excellent job. I only interjected twice. Once to place the vodka into the sauce (I was concerned spilling and possible fire) and when ‘R’ proceeded to chop three heads of garlic and not three cloves…

They had purchased carob chips for the banana, but these were lost. So, they ended up using Guittard chocolate bars we had on hand. A fortuitous error. They were delicious!!

The boys and I attended a full day leadership retreat hosted by the Coalition for Placer Youth, dedicated to educating youth on alcohol and drugs. We learned so much about how the tobacco industry is marketing to youth through avenues other than cigarettes. These other avenues are not regulated and it’s crazy to see the attractive, colorful packaging and marketing methods.
We also learned about marijuana and other drugs effect on the under age 25 brain. Other sessions were on stress management and self care/well being, and how to be a leader in your community. It was an excellent day.

Being Silly

We went to Michael’s to pick up some art supplies. The boys were being silly and decided to create the saying, “Me me big boy” in decorative letters…

Cousin Visit

Cousin Katy, my Auntie Annie (Yaya) and Katy’s kids came and spent the night! The boys had a blast sleeping in a tent out back, swimming in the pool, and playing Minecraft. Little ‘M’ loved playing in the water, and baby ‘M’ has already mastered being adorable. It was a sweet visit for all.IMG_8509 IMG_8484  IMG_8502 IMG_8491 IMG_8482

Fun at Bass Pro Shop

The boys and I went to the local Bass Pro Shop to look around. Outside, they hosted a free archery and bee bee rifle range for kids. The boys had fun trying their hands at both. IMG_8463 IMG_8470 IMG_8468 IMG_8457 IMG_8472 IMG_8460 IMG_8474

Our church’s annual Vacation Bible School (Breakaway) is an over the top week of fun, music, activities and adventure. The boys have attended the camp since we moved here back in 2009. This year, instead of being campers, they served as youth leaders!

Typically, we are in WA/ID over this time so they haven’t been able to serve the past two years. But this year they could. They loved it and look forward to serving next year. This year they were youth leaders for 2nd graders.

Crush Wine Run 5K

My friend Shannon and I ran the Crush Wine Run 5K. I was still recuperating from the nasty cold I had, but needed to get out there and run something.

This was a fun run, aside from dealing with bicyclists on the trail that kept telling us to move over. We move to one side and another set of cyclists tell us to move to the other side. Repeat ad nauseum. It was also very hot. No more racing in this hot weather. Bleh.

But, at the end of the race, there was a wine garden that had about 10 different local wineries represented. We got to taste some lovely wines I had never even heard of. Here’s some of my faves…

KK Graduates!

Our precious niece Kaylee graduated high school! I unfortunately was under the weather with a nasty deep lung cold, but had had it for over a week and did not want to miss seeing her. I flew up for the ceremony on a Friday night, then picked her up Saturday for a fun weekend with her auntie.

The ceremony was held on the football field of her high school. It threatened rain, but aside from some very minor showers, it was OK.

My nieces Paige, Kaylee, and my brother Devin…

It was a sweet surprise to run into some of my friends, including this little peanut who is not so little any more. I used to babysit Maggie when she was in kindergarten…she is now in high school!

After the ceremony, I met up with my friend Julie, whom I have known since 7th grade. She turned 50 the following week and I could not be there, so we celebrated together a little early.

Saturday morning, I met with my friends Heidi, Carol, and Kirsten for breakfast. It was a wonderful time reconnecting. At noon, I picked up KK and we were off for our adventure. (I had done something similar with her sister Paige a few years earlier…)

First stop…the Issaquah Community Playhouse to see the theatrical production of ‘Dreamgirls‘. It would have been perfect had I not been shaking so hard to try to keep from coughing. I would try to hold it in until the music hit a loud note then would cough. I also went through a ton of cough drops.

After the play, we drove into Seattle and checked into our room at the Hotel Max. It’s cool, hipster, boutique hotel. Here is the view from our room.

A delicious Italian dinner at Barolo Ristorante. When I did this with Paige, we went to the Pink Door. I encouraged her to try something she had never tried before  since she was entering a new phase in her life. She tried calamari…was not a fan. Proud of her for trying it though.

I offered the same suggestion to Kaylee. She decided to try escargot. She liked it!

We each had an incredible ravioli dinner that left us stuffed. Decided to walk a bit before dessert and ended up shopping and skipping dessert.

Some neat Seattle architecture…

The nest morning, we went to the Space Needle for brunch. What a wonderful experience. I had made reservations. You bypass the crazy long line and go right up to the (Sky City) restaurant. I had told them that this was a special graduation celebration, and they had a window table and a personal card for Kaylee on the table. The restaurant rotates so we had a magnificent rotating view the whole time. Brunch is a three course meal and everything was amazing. We were still kind of full from dinner the night before so lesson learned for next time. The restaurant also surprised Kaylee with an amazing presentation of ice cream over dry ice. It was the most delicious huckleberry ice cream I have ever had.

When I dropped her back off at her house, she showed me the custom labels? stickers? for her motorbike. She has started competing and is doing very well. She’s wearing the new dress we bought the night before.

So much love for this young woman and precious memories I will always cherish.
